How Does Hair Grow?
Whether we are born with a smooth, shiny head, or hair like Elvis, we are born with about 100,000 hair follicles. As we age, we naturally shed about 60 hairs a day. While it is a common misconception that hair shedding is the cause of hair loss, the hair-shedding follicles still remain active, meaning another hair has the potential to regrow.
Hair growth is an ongoing three-phase process including anagen, catagen, and telogen phases. The anagen phase is the growing phase of hair, lasting anywhere between 2-8 years. The catagen phase is the phase in which some unknown signal causes the hair bulb at the base of the follicle to detach from the scalp. The telogen phase is the final stage of the hair cycle. Once this final stage occurs, the regrowth process then starts over.
